A standard TCG playmat is about 24 x 14 inches: Dragon Shield gives 61 x 35 cm for its mat laid flat, and Ultra PRO about 24 x 13.5 inches. Both use a soft fabric top over a non-slip rubber base, which keeps cards off a rough or damp table. A stitched edge stops the cloth fraying.
Playmats are the one accessory that sits under every game, whichever game you play.

Zoned mats for learning a game
A zoned mat prints the board layout, so a new player knows where each card goes. Konami’s rulebook shows the Yu-Gi-Oh! Game Mat with its zones: the Main Monster Zones, Spell & Trap Zones, Pendulum Zones, Graveyard, Deck and Extra Deck. Konami includes a Game Mat with every Starter and Structure Deck, a paper one in Starter Decks.
Other games do the same. Legend Story Studios includes a rubber playmat with zones in its Part the Mistveil Blitz Deck Collection for Flesh and Blood, and Fantasy Flight puts 2 paper playmats in the Star Wars: Unlimited Two-Player Starter.

Paper, rubber or cloth?
The mats that come with starter products differ from the ones sold on their own. From the publishers’ and makers’ product pages:
| Mat | Where it comes from | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Game Mat | Starter Decks | Paper, with zones |
| Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Game Mat | Structure Decks | Game Mat, with zones |
| Star Wars: Unlimited playmats | Two-Player Starter (2 included) | Paper |
| Misteria Hanging Village playmat | Flesh and Blood Part the Mistveil Blitz Deck Collection | Rubber, with zones |
| Stand-alone TCG playmats | Sold separately (Dragon Shield, Ultra PRO) | Fabric top, rubber base, stitched edge |
A paper mat is fine for learning where cards go, and the zones printed on it teach the layout of the game as you play. A cloth mat with a rubber base is the one to buy once you play regularly: it lies flat, stays put and gives sleeved cards a soft surface.
Sizes in inches and centimeters
Makers list sizes in their own units. Converting the two figures above (at 2.54 cm to the inch):
- Dragon Shield’s 61 x 35 cm is about 24 x 13.8 inches.
- Ultra PRO’s 24 x 13.5 inches is about 61 x 34.3 cm.
So the two standard mats are within about a centimeter of each other.
Caring for a playmat
Roll a cloth playmat for travel rather than folding it, so it does not crease, and let it dry fully before you roll it if it gets wet. Keep drinks off the table during a game: a spill soaks into the fabric and into your cards.
Good to know
Your playmat and your deck box travel together. Sleeve the deck first, so the cards slide easily across the cloth; card sleeve sizes explains which size fits your game.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a TCG playmat?
About 24 x 14 inches. Dragon Shield gives 61 x 35 cm for its TCG playmat laid flat, and Ultra PRO gives about 24 x 13.5 inches for its stitched-edge playmat.
What is a playmat made of?
Usually a soft fabric top on a non-slip rubber base. Ultra PRO says the fabric top helps protect cards during play.
Do I need a zoned playmat?
It helps when you are learning. A zoned mat prints where each card goes, like the Yu-Gi-Oh! Game Mat shown in Konami's rulebook. Once you know the layout, a plain or art mat works just as well.
Do starter products include a playmat?
Some do. Yu-Gi-Oh! Starter and Structure Decks include a Game Mat, the Star Wars: Unlimited Two-Player Starter has 2 paper playmats, and the Flesh and Blood Part the Mistveil Blitz Deck Collection includes a rubber playmat with zones.
