A Pokemon booster box is the Booster Display: a sealed box of 36 booster packs from one expansion. Each pack holds 10 game cards plus 1 Basic Energy. In Scarlet & Violet era sets, those 10 cards are 4 commons, 3 uncommons and 3 foils, and at least one of the foils is rare or higher.

The Pokemon Company calls the box a “Booster Display” on its product pages, because it is the same box a store opens to sell packs one at a time. Fans and sellers usually call it a booster box. Both names mean the same 36-pack product.

What is inside each pack

Pokemon Support describes the makeup of a current booster pack. The pattern matters if you are opening a box to build a deck, because it tells you roughly how many of each rarity a box gives you.

Part of the pack Cards Notes
Commons 4 The most plentiful cards in the set
Uncommons 3
Foils 3 At least one is rare or higher
Basic Energy 1 Not counted in the 10 game cards

Pokemon Support adds an era note: sets released before Scarlet & Violet only guaranteed at least one reverse foil per pack. If you buy an older sealed box, its packs follow the older pattern printed for that set.

Does a box improve your chances?

Not by the pack. Pokemon Support says the packs in its boxed products are the same packs sold on their own and carry no special rate of cards. A box simply gives you 36 chances in one go, all from one set.

That is the real reason to buy one. If you want to build a deck around one expansion, or open a whole set with friends, 36 packs of the same set is the most direct way to do it. If you want accessories too, look at an Elite Trainer Box instead.

Smaller ways to buy the same packs

The Pokemon Company sells each Scarlet & Violet expansion in several sizes. On the Journey Together product page, the options run from a single sleeved booster up to the 36-pack display:

  • Booster Bundle: 6 booster packs.
  • Build & Battle Box: 4 booster packs.
  • Elite Trainer Box: 9 booster packs plus accessories.
  • Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box: 11 booster packs, sold through the Pokemon Center.
  • Booster Display: 36 booster packs.

Compare the box with these before you buy. Booster box or Elite Trainer Box sets the two most popular options side by side.

How to buy a sealed box safely

Counterfeit boxes exist. Pokemon Support says fake booster packs are often hard to tell from real ones, and that a price far below the suggested retail price is “a near certain warning” of counterfeit goods. It also names flea markets as the most reported source of fakes.

Before you pay

TCGplayer’s guide notes that sealed booster boxes come in soft cellophane with a Poke Ball logo, and that packs have straight, flat edges along their seals. Compare the listing photos with the product images on the official Pokemon TCG site, and pass on any box sold as “resealed” or with no clear photos of the wrap.

Buy from a seller with a long feedback record and clear photos of the actual box. Repacks and mystery boxes are a different product: they hold packs or cards gathered from different sources, not a factory-sealed display. If you are unsure about cards you pulled, our guide on how to tell if Pokemon cards are fake covers the checks.

Where to keep the cards after you open it

A box of 36 packs produces 360 game cards and 36 Energy cards. Sleeve the cards you will play, and put the rest in a trading card storage box. For a first sort of the rares, a 9-pocket trading card binder keeps them flat and visible. Other games sell boxes too: see what is in a Lorcana booster box or the One Piece Card Game starter deck.

Frequently asked questions

How many packs are in a Pokemon booster box?

36. The Pokemon Company sells the booster box as a Booster Display, and its product listings for Scarlet & Violet sets say it includes 36 booster packs. Each pack holds 10 cards and 1 Basic Energy.

Is a booster box better than an Elite Trainer Box?

It depends on what you want. A booster box gives you the most packs of one set. An Elite Trainer Box has 9 packs plus sleeves, Energy cards, dice and a storage box, which suits a new player better.

Do booster boxes have better pull rates than single packs?

Pokemon Support says the packs in its boxed products are the same packs sold on their own and have no special rate of cards. A box just gives you more packs of the same set.

How do I know which products a Pokemon set comes in?

Open the set's expansion page on the official Pokemon TCG site. Its featured products list shows every box, bundle and pack sold for that expansion, so you can see whether a Booster Display exists before you go looking for one.
