A One Piece Card Game starter deck is a complete, ready-to-play deck: 1 Leader card, a 50-card deck and 10 DON!! cards, which is exactly what Bandai’s rules ask for. Recent starter decks such as ST-36 also include a playsheet and one booster pack. Buy one first, then add booster packs once you have picked a Leader and colors.

Bandai publishes the game and lists every product’s contents on its official site. This page uses those listings and the game’s Comprehensive Rules.

What a starter deck contains

Bandai’s product page for STARTER DECK -YELLOW Eustass “Captain” Kid- [ST-36] lists:

The deck rules in plain terms

The Comprehensive Rules set out what a legal deck looks like:

  1. Exactly 1 Leader card.
  2. A deck of exactly 50 cards.
  3. A separate DON!! deck of 10 cards.
  4. No more than 4 cards with the same card number.
  5. Only cards that share a color with your Leader.

The DON!! deck sits apart from your 50 cards and is not shuffled into it. The Play Guide on Bandai’s site explains how DON!! cards are used and walks through a first game.

Starter deck or booster packs?

Start with a starter deck. It is a legal deck the day you open it, and its Leader shows you how one color plays. Booster packs are random and spread across many Leaders and colors, so they make more sense once you know what you want to build.

When you do open boosters, keep the Leader rule in mind: only cards that share a color with your Leader can go in your deck. Cards in other colors are for trading or a second deck.

Good to know

Bandai notes on its booster product pages that new cards become tournament legal 7 days after the release date in your region, and from the pre-release date at your local game store.

Reading Bandai’s product codes

Bandai gives every product a short code, shown in square brackets on its product pages. Starter decks use ST and a number, such as ST-36 for the yellow Eustass “Captain” Kid deck. Booster packs use OP and a number, such as OP-16 for THE TIME OF BATTLE. The code is the quickest way to make sure a listing is the product you want, since several products can share a character or a color.

Choosing a first Leader

Every starter deck is built around one Leader, and the Leader sets the deck’s colors. Pick the one whose character or color you like most. Whichever you choose, a legal deck has the same structure of Leader, 50 cards and 10 DON!!, so the rules you learn carry over to every other deck.

If two people are learning together, buy two different starter decks. You get two ready-to-play decks in different colors, and you can trade any booster pack cards between you.

Card care for a One Piece deck

A 50-card deck plus a Leader and 10 DON!! cards is 61 cards. If you sleeve them, buy a pack of at least 61 sleeves of one design. Our guide to card sleeve sizes covers the standard and small sizes, and what deck box size you need covers boxes for a sleeved deck.
